Started with linn and quad, had flirtations with Sansui, an affair with NAD. I’m now in long term relationships with ATC, Redford and Croft. I’ve been a bit of a slag and flings with Lenco, Heybrook, Garrard, Phillips, technics and a few others.

What, did no one else have a Rigonda Party Time? Soviet’s finest. Wow Steve, you're bringing back memories - My dad bought one which I took full advantage of every time he went out and left the house - those were the days, vinyl and then John Peel on a night cause he always played some reggae back then in the 70's Ours was like this one, with some quite big floor standers that came with it

We just had the small version. Just small speakers Discovered Hendrix, early Status Quo, early lindisfarne, Van Morrison, Bob Marley, toots and the Maytals, all in my bedroom on that little system. Oh.. yeah. And Anne Hesketh.

Late 60's for me listening to Buddy Holly, Chubby Checker, The Beatles etc on a Dansette (used to stack around 6 singles at a time or 3 LP's) Remember the 'needle' looked massive

I am sure I have seen a Dansette in the loft at my mother's house - will be back there next weekend I need to take another look.
My journey has been fraught, too long, and unnecessarily expensive. If only I knew then what I know now. I suppose that is true of most things in life.

I can only conclude that it somehow goes with the territory, the learning and intrinsic to a degree I guess as part of all that

If only I knew then what I know now. I suppose that is true of most things in life. I reckon many will relate to that Macca, myself included. I can only conclude that it somehow goes with the territory, the learning and intrinsic to a degree I guess as part of all that suppose I am making it sound worse than it was. In truth I had no money to spend on big mistakes, I did not really have any disposable income until I was in my mid-thirties by which time I was a lot more sceptical about price = performance. I couldn't say I would do everything different if I had the time over again because lack of money back then limited my options so much. I did not have a really good sounding system until I was 26, and then when the amp died I was unable to replicate that success with other amps - I did not understand why - so ended up changing everything again. And again. Only when I took a step back and started looking at how it all worked from an engineering point of view instead of 'This is a warm amp', 'This is a bright-sounding CD player' did I make any real progress, and even now what I have is more by accident than design. (Although I did learn about room acoustics the hard way by moving house so many times, so at least that bit was totally deliberate). I've owned a ton of equipment and heard even more but I don't think that alone constitutes 'experience' in any useful sense. I don't think we gain 'experience' from doing purely passive activities like listening - but I did learn something from designing and modifying loudspeakers. Mainly I learned how little I actually knew about a vast and complex subject.

I think the internet and forums have made exploring things a little less fraught , for me things took off when I started DIY. That would not have been possible without various forums and the amount of information shared and help given in them. Of course there are some nuggets of misinformation about too! But I think it's made the sharing of opinions, tips, hints etc far easier then when you had to rely on dealers etc.

my journey started when my late mum bought a B&o all in one record player/amp in 1973, and being introduced to the wonders of Rick Wakeman by my music teacher in about 1974. When I bought my own gear, it was a trip to Newcastle's Handyside Arcade (long since demolished) and got a Technics TT and SU9011 amp and a set of Koss headphones, then Lintone Audio in Durham, where I purchased the good Rega 2/Arcam Alpha/Heybrook HB1's which I had for a while, before swapping the speakers for TDL Studio 1's (never thought about upping the amp
