Ok, I’ve got a bit of an Apple ecosystem going on, but I’ve always been aware of the expense and closed system nature of Apple products. However…
Going away is a bit of a faff for me to play music.
Oppo pm3, chord mojo and poly plus the phone to control the poly and play micro sd card flacs. On a flight I always need the carry on case with a massive outside pocket.
Still it sounds amazing.
Going to Greece a couple of weeks ago presented another problem to solve. We put the house on the market on the day we flew, and I needed to pick up any phone calls that came through. (Just one call in the end, but hey ho).
So thought I’d investigate some Bluetooth earbuds. I have some old Shure wired buds which I very occasionally use in the mojo, but I needed to hear the phone.
Anyway.. at the airport shop I decided to pull the trigger on some AirPod pro’s. God bless the triple lock pension.
First impressions were very good. I got a 6 month Apple Music trial. Sounded good, especially tracks using their Spatial thing (Dolby Atmos).
That was fine whilst I had WiFi, but I wanted to use these when on the beach. So I downloaded the Qobuz app, and then further downloaded albums and playlists directly on the phone.
I didn’t have a great expectation as these things connect by Bluetooth after all.
Lying under an umbrella I pressed play to see what my hifi testing playlist sounded like via the Qobuz app.
To borrow one of Oli’s expressions.. my head fell off.
Robbie Robertson’s ‘Somewhere down the Crazy River’ has never sounded like this before. Subterranean bass in the middle of my head and a detailed soundstage that was astonishing.
And so it was the same joyous noise whatever track I played.
Kept me thrilled for a fortnight.
On the flight back the noise cancelling function was ridiculous. Switch it on and you are just bathed in silence. Had some Bose noise cancelling years ago, which reduced the roar, but nowt like this.
Coming home, I discover that these things can be used directly with Apple TV and so suddenly the telly sounds like nothing I’ve heard before. Ok, it’s a shame for anyone trying to watch with me.
So I’m looking at the chord mojo and poly wondering when I’ll ever need them again… apart from when I fancy a proper headphone session.
