WTF is wrong with me?
I sold my Koetsu RSP earlier this year, and month ago I was all in for selling my Bardo & 12" Enterprise mk4 + BB3.
Today I've been sat here listening to system 2 (Wiim Pro > DacMagic Plus & Technics SL-PG440A > Cambridge C50/A50 > Kef 104ab + 80s wires) and even though my upstairs tennent is out meaning I can move rooms and let the main rig really rip, I'm still here with system 2.
I have infact been wondering all day what the 104s would sound like fed by 'better' more modern electronics.
My main rig consists to my mind of some seriously good components in anybodies book (Bardo/Enterprise/Jolida JD9, Lector CDP, Innuos ZenITH/Pimped Black Ice/Uptone Audio USB Regen > MFA Baby Ref V1 > GamuT D200 > ML Summits) and yet there's something about the sound of system 2 that captivates and engages me. Whenever I'm listening to S2 I struggle to read a book or the forums, I'm focused on the music, the same happens when I fire up system 2a (Puresound A30 with the 104s, or to a lesser degree the QA C20s) whereas with the main rig I can happily do other things.
Is it the room or the 104s that's causing this phenomenon, I mean come me on, S2 barring the Wimm Pro & DacMagic, consists of kit that is 30 - 60 years old, I bought the amps in 88, cdp in 94, 401 is from 63.
There is, just something about the sound that draws me in, S1 has everything I thought I wanted from reproduced sound, it's detailed, rich with fast nuanced bass etc but You find myself now preferring the sound of S2/2a. On Sunday a friend is coming over to help me try and unravel this conundrum, or ell it just put the cat amongst the pigeons? We plan to transfer my spare Cambridge A50 and the 104s,into the main room then try the 104s on the end of the GamuT and also swap the GamuT for the A50 fed by the MFA Baby Ref to see (a) what a 'better' amp & sources do for the 104s, (b) what a 'better' Pre and sources do for the A50 and 104s, this, will also sort the is it the room question.
The outcome will I think prove very interesting from a future system building perspective, is it just (1) the speakers that are providing this beguiling sound, (2) the amp and speakers together, or (3) is it the 2nd room?
If its 1 or 2 then this could/will see me make some major kit changes, I already have a spare A50 if I need to sell the GamuT to achieve the sound I want so that just leaves selling the Summits and scoring a 2nd pair of 104s + Wilmslow Xovers and getting them that Cooky (the Tannoy guy) for re-veneering (in walnut).
Lets see what Sunday brings........... To be continued.
